Wow, what an amazing story. You simply cannot find contemporary characters and plots like the ones Hugo created. His style of writing is exhilarating, he sucks you into the story and captivates you with every twist and turn. The characters you meet are admirable and guided by firm, unflinching convictions but are bound to come into conflict. On one hand, it is tragic that nothing like this is produced in today's society, which is a poor reflection of our culture, but on the other hand, this fact makes you want to really cherish novels like this and read as much of them as possible, and show others that our current culture is not the only one possible. The book is full of typos, probably introduced during scanning, and the translation as a whole is of very variable quality. In places the English is incomprehensible, and the wonderful original has been butchered, so it gives the impression that it was done by someone who was not fluent in either English or French. And yet other parts are well-written and capture Victor Hugo's poetic prose. It's as if more than one person was involved. There must be better English versions available.
I have no complaint with Victor Hugo, this is a terrific novel but just don't buy this edition. It was scanned in but never proof read so you often find "lie" for "he" and, my favorite, a character shouts "Vive la Biberte!" I don't know if there's another edition of this book but if not then buy one in paper and enjoy a great page turner.
The Victor Hugo novel "Ninety-Three" is a classic and was the subject of an entire chapter of Ayn Rand's nonfiction work "The Rmonatic Manifesto." It ws through this work that I developed an interest in this book.
Now that it is offered on , I read the entire work, and it is one of the most compelling, thrilling, and enlightening pieces of literature I have ever read in my life. It tells a story about how a number of individuals dealt with the French Revolution, specifically the Age of terror. Among the characters are a former priest turned government (republic) agent, a marquis who returns from England for exile and rallies pro-monarchy forces in Northern France, a mother whose children are kidnapped during a siege on a village, and an officer of the Republican army who, throughout the book, is faced with difficult decisions. Characters rise to heroic occasions throughout the entire book.
If there is one complaint I do have about the book, it has nothing to do with Hugo or the plot-themes, but the awkward, error-prone manner in which the publication was presented. There are numerous misspellings, sentence gaps, and typographic errors in the body of the text. Clearly the publishers could have taken the time to rectify the many errors which I encountered in the publication.
This is one of the best books ever written, in my opinion. It deserves to be better handled in its publication.
Since reading Les Miserables, Hugo has been a favorite author. I was not disappointed at all. Hugo does a great job of moving the reader into a different world view from that which we experience today.
The version has a great many typos, but is very readable.
Hugo tends to be redundant and verbose in places, but the story is compelling enough and the story is very similar to what is called "psycho-history."
The major characters are duty bound, desperate at times, often victims of higher ideals or lesser ones, while offering engaging insights to a people of an older time and less than modern values. In some sense they might be considered noble and dedicated, but too often brutal, honest, and often arrogant in their perspectives and loyalties. While the reader may not agree with the values and conclusion, the reader does gain a kind of understanding.
Ninety-Three is the last novel of the great Victor Hugo, who penned Les Miserables, one of the most celebrated novels of all time. Les Miserables is a glorious epic which spans an entire landscape of characters and decades of French history. Ninety-Three spans a much shorter time frame and lasts roughly 1/3 the length of Les Miserables. However, Ninety-Three packs a punch similar to Les Miserables in terms of story and character depth while remaining manageable in length. If you read Les Miserables and loved it, read this book. If you haven't read Les Miserables, and you aren't sure you want to tackle that beast just yet, read this. It is an excellent introduction to Hugo's style of storytelling, characterization, and pace.
In Ninety-Three, Hugo again demonstrated his amazing ability to create real, honest, flesh-and-blood characters. Their struggles help us to answer the following questions At what point do we sacrifice what is right for what it takes to come out on top? At what point should justice and duty be tempered by mercy? How do we make the right decision when the options available to us are not in black and white? How do we avoid becoming what we hate?
Similar to Les Miserables, we watch helplessly as the most innocent of victims are attacked by war and poverty - and we witness their resilience. We are held in terrified suspense at times, and see redemption dawning on the horizon at other times. And like Les Miserables, the conclusion of Ninety-Three is nothing short of earth-shattering in its masterful depiction of man's internal struggle to make complex moral choices, in the face of the horrific realities of war and life. I would highly recommend this compelling classic to any serious reader in search of a thought-provoking read.
FYI ...there are numerous scanning errors in the text of this version. For example many times "he" comes out "lie". It is generally decipherable so it does not necessarily hinder the reading experience, but it can be distracting at times.
