A follow-up to the author’s Crossing the Cultural Divide the Gaffes of an Englishman in Italy, which recounted the adventures and misadventures of Hugh Stalwart over a time-span of more than 20 years among the Italians, this hilarious book presents us with a more mature, more reflective, though only slightly less accident-prone Stalwart, who on the occasion of his 50th birthday feels the need to weigh things up after all his time in Italy, to establish why he still resides there and why he left his native England in the first place. His reflections are hampered, however, by a hectic work schedule in Verona, Macerata and Rome, by wacky students, by his tendency to nod off, by his fixation with rugby, and by various human beings insensitively invading his personal space. A lively array of characters includes Ham, an outspoken, muscle-bound New Yorker, and Stalwart’s temperamental, unfathomable colleague Lucia, whose fascination with this Englishman appears to go well beyond mere cross-cultural issues…
Dominic Stewart has lived in Italy since 1987. He teaches English Language and Italian-English Translation at the University of Macerata, Italy.

Although the writing is well done and easy to follow, I didn't find the humor more than mildly amusing. Each culture has it's own style of humor and I haven't mastered British humor. I did enjoy some parts of the book but felt it became bogged down during the conference lectures. It was an easy read and well-written.

An Italian Job Two Days in the Life of an Englishman in Italy edition by Dominic Stewart Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Yes, not bad at all. Dominic Stewart's _An Italian Job_ is a funny fly-on-the-wall narrative following an Englishman around as he tries to draw some conclusions about his twenty years of residence in Italy. The upside is that we get insights into Italy which do not contain the mandatory dose of mafia, vineyards, pasta, restoring old houses, corruption, Berlusconi, dreamy descriptions of Tuscany blah blah blah, and the book did make me laugh out loud. The downside is that the bungling protagonist Hugh Stalwart never really reaches any conclusions about his time in Italy, so it's a bit inconclusive.
Although the writing is well done and easy to follow, I didn't find the humor more than mildly amusing. Each culture has it's own style of humor and I haven't mastered British humor. I did enjoy some parts of the book but felt it became bogged down during the conference lectures.
